Light of Life

This was a very personal project for me as I started to bring my camera with me to church to try and discover what it was that continually brought me back every week. I discovered three central themes throughout this project, which were the faith of a child, compassion, and desperation.

Faith of a child is one of the most beautiful ways to believe wholeheartedly and without any doubt in your faith. It’s a reoccurring theme in the bible, Jesus himself says we should strive to have the faith of a child, it’s truly inspiring.

The compassion was evident to me when I asked one of the priests if he had time to walk the church with me so I could take his portrait. We didn’t speak the same language yet with my broken French and through the use of gestures we spent over 30 min walking the church. He told me his favorite place in the church was where the light peaked through the stained glass windows and shined on the columns. Such a busy man yet he took the time to help a girl who couldn’t even speak the language.

And lastly, desperation. I saw so many people coming to the church and collapsing, head down bent in prayer in the pews. When everything is going wrong, there will always be a place that has its doors open and will listen during times of struggle.

This project was very introspective for me and I hope you enjoy it as well. The final form was three small identical books, imitating the size of a prayer book. Each was bookmarked on pages that showed the images that spoke of the three central themes I discovered.
